Dentures Q & A

Why would I need dentures?

Dentures are a removable appliance that replaces the teeth that have been lost or removed. They help restore the smile and look of natural teeth. Tooth loss can occur because of injury, trauma, decay, damage, or gum disease that results in the jawbone becoming too weak. While there are other prosthetic options available, if the majority of your teeth are lost or removed, dentures may be the best choice.

What denture options are available?

There are several kinds of dentures available.  At 866-FIX-TEETH, we offer metal frame dentures, cosmetic flexible dentures, or a combination of the two.

Metal frame dentures are made of a combination of strong, neutral metals. They consist of a metal frame that is customized to fit your gums and palate, an acrylic base, teeth that replace your missing teeth, and metal clasps that wrap around your natural teeth to secure the denture in place. This is a traditional kind of denture that fits comfortably and securely. The metal components are sometimes visible, so these might not be suitable for everybody.

Flexible partial dentures are also known as Flexi-Partials. They are constructed from a bendable, lightweight material and are designed to provide additional comfort. Metal clips are not used with this type of denture and they are completely metal-free and hypoallergenic. Flexi-Partials can also be made in several shades which can be color-matched to the gum tissue.

Combination dentures include all the advantages of both metal frame and flexible dentures. Combination dentures consist of a thin and precise metal frame which provides a secure fit with the aesthetic benefit of a natural appearance.

How Do I Take Care of Dentures?

You will need to brush your gums daily before inserting dentures to prevent plaque from building up on the soft tissue.  You will also need to brush and rinse your dentures at least once a day. At night, your dentures should soak in denture cleaning solution or cool water to prevent warping or the dentures drying out. With good care, dentures should last for five to seven years before a replacement is needed.
